This is where I get to share the fun stuff. I have spent much of my career creating assets that describe how I do my work. On this page, you can learn what I know.
My focus is on methodologies that can be used in any tool set. Whether you are just getting started or an expert, I think you will find something useful.

Each component of best practices connects with all other components. By managing all best practices, including conducting a thorough content audit, optimizing content workflows, and enhancing metadata and taxonomy design, you will achieve a more valuable content management system.

Governance describes the best practices associated with managing all of your components, including effective content workflows. It's essential to establish a governance council that decides when changes can be made, who has the authority to make those decisions, and who is responsible for implementing these changes.

A content audit provides a comprehensive overview of what content you currently have. This information is essential for establishing your channel models, content models, taxonomy design, and reuse models.

A channel model outlines what your content will look like when it is ready for your user. It establishes the best practices for defining which channels you have, including PDF, websites, or other document types, and how the content appears in each channel.

A content model defines the rules for your content. It defines the overall structure of your content, such as when to use headings, paragraphs, and lists.
The content model also maps to channel models by defining what elements should follow layout rules defined in the channel model.

Taxonomy design serves as the blueprint for labeling your content effectively. It outlines best practices for categorizing related labels such as subject, tools, features, audience, and information type.

Metadata refers to the pieces of data you apply directly to your content, playing a crucial role in how other systems interact with your content.

Your storage models describe where you keep your content. Whether it's a basic folder system, a document management system, or a component content management system, you need to follow best practices for organizing your information.

Your reuse models inform your writers and systems about how your content can be reused. This may include basic copy and paste techniques or more advanced xref reuse, commonly used in modern structured authoring systems.

While a content audit provides an overview of the content you currently have, a content plan helps you decide what content you need.
It defines what content to include in assignments managed in your content workflows.

Your content workflows outline best practices for managing your work, from planning and creation to editing and publishing content across your channels.

You cannot have high-quality content without adhering to good standards. Your content standards tells writers how to apply all of the best practices you have defined.
If you are looking for the best practices on how I work, consider becoming a member of the Crimson Sage community. It is free, except for a few details about yourself, and provides access to my articles, papers, and how-to documents.
